Overview

A longstanding specialty of Riccardo Muti, Rossini’s Stabat mater combines the dramatic intensity of opera with the majesty and eloquence of devotional choral music. The CSO’s 2018 performances of the work drew much acclaim, with the Chicago Tribune hailing “the combination of passion and spirituality [Muti] brought to it.” The program begins with music from Rossini’s William Tell: the electrifying, instantly recognizable overture — whose whirlwind finale has raced from the opera house to TV, movies and pop culture — and the sparkling ballet music.
