Overview
Elgar’s Enigma Variations captures the soul of Edwardian England in a series of noble and stirring portraits of friends, family members and the composer himself. Margaret Bonds’ variations on an African-American spiritual offer a poignant meditation on the civil rights movement, composed after a visit to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1963. Opening the program is Coleridge-Taylor’s rhapsodic Ballade, a piece commissioned after an endorsement from Elgar.
