Wishing a very happy 90th birthday to the legendary Indian conductor Zubin Mehta!
Born in 1936 in Bombay, Mehta first studied music with his father Mehli Mehta, a violinist and the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. He entered the the conducting program at the Akademie für Musik in Vienna in 1954, and within a few years he had won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition and was a prizewinner of the Tanglewood Music Center. Mehta has served as music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, as well as chief conductor of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
A frequent and favorite guest conductor in Chicago, Mehta has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on numerous occasions, both at Orchestra Hall and the Ravinia Festival. A complete list is below.
