The Chicago Symphony Orchestra family joins the music world in mourning the loss of German composer Wolfgang Rihm. He died on July 27, 2024, at the age of 72.
Rihm was born on March 13, 1952, in Karlsruhe. The Orchestra has performed several of his works, including the U.S. premieres of Dämmerung, Time Chant and Sotto voce. Composed for and dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter, Rihm’s Time Chant was recorded by Mutter and the Orchestra, and the release on Deutsche Grammophon won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance–Instrumental Soloist(s) (with orchestra).
