Read the program book for Mahler 1, Oct 26-28, 2023.
Magnificent music was performed in Orchestra Hall on Thursday evening’s Chicago Symphony Orchestra program, led by guest conductor Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. The concert was anchored by Mahler’s audacious First Symphony and opened with his vivid dream-like Blumine, in which a quietly haunting, yet romantic, serenade by a trumpet soared above the orchestra. Joining the ensemble, cellist Jian Wang made his CSO subscription concert debut performing powerful monologues found in Bloch’s Schelomo, also titled “Hebraic Rhapsody.”
