Join legendary singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant, members of the CSO and special guests for a joyful singalong with Mother Goose. This captivating program features traditional nursery rhymes adapted by Merchant and orchestrated for an array of instrumental groups. Be a part of this magical musical world of learning and imagination.

Mother Goose & the Cabinet of Wonder is a co-production of Natalie Merchant, Chicago Children’s Theatre and the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Orchestra Explorers

From 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Family Matinee attendees have access to an array of free Orchestra Explorer Activities inspired by Mother Goose rhymes, located on floors 1-5 of the Symphony Center Rotunda and in Grainger Ballroom.

Floor 2: Hey Diddle Diddle — try a string instrument at an Instrument Petting Zoo

Floor 3: Queen of Hearts — participate in a group dance led by a Chicago Children's Theatre teaching artist

Floor 4:

  • Little Miss Muffet — color spiders for our web
  • Jack Be Nimble — make and jump over a Lego candlestick
  • Old King Cole — take a photo with props in a photo booth

Floor 5:

  • Humpty Dumpty — sing along with Civic Orchestra viola Sava
  • Hickory Dickory Dock — race a mouse car down the clock
  • Rhyming Town — read a story in an independent reading nook
