Overview
Widely recognized in Chicago for both its quality performances and ongoing community engagement efforts, the Civitas Ensemble returns to Symphony Center to pair chamber music classics with lesser-known works, including Mahler’s Piano Quartet — the composer’s only surviving piece of chamber music. Among Mozart’s most popular chamber works, his Piano Quartet in G Minor highlights the addition of the viola to the traditional piano trio, creating complex conversations among the instruments. Strauss’ Piano Quartet in C Minor is full of contrast — from its quiet opening motifs to its darkly tinged Scherzo.
