The anthology of German folk poetry, known as Des Knaben Wunderhorn, arguably became the most important literary influence on the music of Gustav Mahler. Writing two dozen songs that cover themes of courtship and tragedy, satire and the supernatural, several of these songs’ melodies can be found in his early symphonies.
