A tusch to honor the tenure of Riccardo Muti

OVERVIEW

Following the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ performance of Beethoven’s Missa solemnis on Sunday, June 25, 2023 — Maestro Riccardo Muti’s last program in Orchestra Hall as the ensemble’s 10th music director — members of the brass and percussion sections honored the celebrated conductor with a tusch. The tradition of musicians playing a tusch — a musical flourish or brass fanfare, sometimes spontaneous and usually improvised — dates to the 17th century, and it is a rare honor bestowed upon a fellow musician. Bravo, Maestro Muti!
