Mozart and Wagner prove to be a dynamic duo for the third week of “Welcome Back” concerts by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The program, titled Overture (premiering June 10 and repeating through June 13), also marks the return of guest conductor Edo de Waart, a longtime favorite on the Orchestra Hall podium.
The three-week series brings the Chicago Symphony Orchestra back to Symphony Center for its first live-audience concerts since the pandemic-induced hiatus. The program features a reduced-force ensemble of 44 musicians in masterworks for chamber orchestra: Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni and Symphony No. 40 and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll.
In her review posted on wttw.com, critic Hedy Weiss wrote: “De Waart, understated but precise in his conducting style, elicited a sound of pure beauty from his musicians that had all the intimacy and clarity of chamber music, even when the orchestra assembled was more than 30 musicians strong.”
Though remaining concerts June 11-13 are at capacity, the performances are being filmed for a possible online release later this year.
Next month, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra returns to the Ravinia Festival for its annual summer residency, this year beginning July 9 and running through Aug. 15. Single tickets for CSO concerts at Ravinia go on sale June 16 at ravinia.org.
