New York, Carnegie Hall

The anticipation builds for Zell Music Director Klaus Mäkelä and the CSO and their second concert of their first tour together at Carnegie Hall.

After a warm send off from the audiences in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the CSO was quickly reminded that the current U.S. tour with Zell Music Director Klaus Mäkelä was a winter tour. Weather-related delays couldn’t deter the musicians from arriving in New York in good spirits and ready for their first appearance together in Carnegie Hall with Klaus Mäkelä. After some time to settle in, musicians were ready for a morning open rehearsal that welcomed an audience of nearly 500 listeners to the historic concert hall that opened in 1891, the same year as the Orchestra’s first season in Chicago.

Musicians found time for some sightseeing and fun ahead of the evening concert which opened with Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) and Sibelius’ Lemminkäinen. Multiple curtain calls for Klaus Mäkelä and the Orchestra earned the enthusiastic audience a very special encore: Sibelius’ Musette from Suite from King Christian II. The celebratory mood continued at a postconcert reception hosted by CSO patrons who joined the tour for the stop in New York and who welcomed musicians and staff to Carnegie Hall’s Rohatyn Room.

One of New York’s most iconic landmarks, Carnegie Hall has extended a warm welcome to the CSO since the Orchestra’s first appearance there in 1898.
