Before packing up and heading back home to the icy Midwest, a few Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians stayed in California to work with musicians in the Orange County Youth Symphony and String Ensemble, which operate under the auspices of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County (the presenter of the CSO’s concert Jan. 24 at the Segerstrom Concert Hall).
Founded in 1970, the Orange County Youth Symphony is the official youth orchestra of Orange County. OCYS and OCYSE musicians appear in their own performances in prestigious venues across Orange County and Southern California.
The CSO’s Daniel Carson (bass), John Hagstrom (trumpet), Mihaela Ionescu (violin) and John Bruce Yeh (assistant principal clarinet) participated in rehearsals and a Q&A session with the students at the Soka Performing Arts Center on Sunday, courtesy of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. The educational activities were organized by the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
This week, the CSO returns to Orchestra Hall for concerts Jan. 29-31 and Feb. 1, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and featuring pianist Daniel Trifonov, soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Also on the program, Buckner’s Symphony No. 4 (Romantic).
