Two-day residency in Naples, Florida, Jan. 14-15

Naples, on the southwest coast of Florida, welcomed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti, Music Director Emeritus for Life, for a two-day residency at Artis—Naples, a performing-arts campus.

The first day started with a presentation titled Music in Motion, given by Vanessa Moss, CSO vice president for operations, and Dale Hedding, vice president of development. At the Royal Poinciana Golf Club, before a group of approximately 150 business leaders, they discussed the process of taking the CSO on tour. CSO piccolo/flute Jennifer Gunn and CSO Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny performed for the crowd.

Back at the campus, Maestro Muti led CSO members in a rehearsal of works by Bellini, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Donizetti, Verdi, Golijov, Chabrier, Falla, Martucci and Brahms. In the afternoon, Jennifer Gunn offered a masterclass, open to the public, at Artis-Naples’ Ubben Signature Event Space.

Ahead of the first CSO concert, donors gathered for a reception in the Kohan Gallery with some CSO musicians in attendance.

Then it was time for the main event, a concert by the CSO and Muti featuring works by Donizetti, Verdi, Golijov, Chabrier and Falla. Afterward, Artis—Naples hosted a reception in Norris Garden for the entire tour party.

The second day followed a similar pattern, with masterclasses and recreational activities in the morning; then a reception in the afternoon preceded a concert of works by Bellini, Schubert and Tchaikovsky in the evening.
