From Orlando, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti headed to Sarasota, known as a cultural mecca, with a dazzling array of museums, galleries, theater and live music.
Presented by the Sarasota Concert Association, the CSO and Muti performed on March 1 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. among Sarasota’s most prestigious venues. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s firm, Taliesin Associated Architects, the 1,741-seat Van Wezel Hall opened in 1970. The building, which features the color purple inside and out, has been nicknamed the “purple cow” or “purple people seater.”
At the sold-out performance, Muti and the CSO reveled in the sonorous accents of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, the iconic phrases of Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition and Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake.
A little down time in the sun preceded the evening’s events, including a pre-concert reception and a post-concert party at the home of CSOA Life Trustee Ling Z. Markovitz.
