The Winter Tour 2023 rolled on to Florida for the first of four concerts this week in the Sunshine State. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti traveled to Orlando for the orchestra’s first-ever concert Feb. 28 in that city and at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, which presented the CSO for this debut.

The center, which opened in 2014, is named for Dr. Philip Phillips (1874-1959), a physician, philanthropist and citrus magnate, who once owned more than 5,000 acres of central Florida groves. Several theaters are in the complex, including Steinmetz Hall, which opened in 2022.

Before the concert at Steinmetz Hall, the CSO performed an open rehearsal, followed by a pre-concert reception with donors and sponsors. During its concert, the CSO brought the sold-out house to its feet with performances of works by Beethoven, Mussorgsky and Liadov. A post-concert party hosted by longtime CSO supporter Joyce Green rounded out the activities.

Next up, the CSO and Muti journey to Sarasota and then head to Naples for a two-concert residency.
