The final concert on the first leg of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2023 North American Tour ended in triumph Thursday at Koerner Hall in Toronto. Presented by the Royal Conservatory of Music, the engagement marked the CSO’s first appearance in Toronto since 1914.

For their second performance at the venue, Riccardo Muti and the CSO offered Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Eighth Symphony, Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake and Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition.

Earlier in the day, CSO musicians took in the sights of Toronto, while others, including Principal Percussion Cynthia Yeh, participated in master classes organized by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute.

After the CSO returns to Symphony Center for a few weeks, Muti joins them Feb. 23-25 in Chicago and then in Kansas City for a concert Feb. 26 with Julia Fischer in Schumann’s Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony. They wrap up their winter tour by traveling to Florida for four concerts from Feb. 28 to March 4.

During the second concert, percussionist James Ross heads out for a day of sightseeing in Toronto.
