in this essay, Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, co-chairman emeritus of the CSO Latino Alliance, discusses how an Alliance event introduced him to Civic Orchestra of Chicago member Lidanys Graterol, a native of Venezuela.
I first met Lidanys Graterol during our CSO Latino Alliance 10th Anniversary Celebration in January at Instituto Cervantes. In early December, I had the privilege of attending her senior recital as she prepares to graduate from Roosevelt University. Her deep passion for the cello is truly inspiring and traces back to her roots in Venezuela, where she was part of the renowned El Sistema, a program that makes music education accessible to all.
Surrounded by exceptional teachers and peers, Lidanys found the encouragement to refine her craft. Even during moments of doubt when she considered stepping away from the instrument, the opportunities she encountered reignited her dedication. These experiences have shaped her journey and ultimately brought her to Chicago, where she has thrived at Roosevelt University.
I learned that Lidanys’ journey has been extraordinary, marked by impressive achievements. She has participated in prestigious international festivals, including the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, where she collaborated with musicians from the Berlin and Vienna philharmonics. Here in Chicago, she worked with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through her membership in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, further enriching her musical journey. (Her Civic position is partially sponsored by Dr. Leo and Catherine Miserendino.)
One of her most treasured milestones was winning her university’s solo sompetition, which granted her the honor of performing Dvořák’s concerto as a soloist at Symphony Center with her university orchestra — a moment she cherishes with immense joy and pride.
Looking ahead, Lidanys is excited to expand her creative endeavors. In addition to continuing her work as a teacher and performer, she plans to explore music production through an internship at a recording studio. She’s also eager to delve into filming and photography, merging her artistic talents in innovative ways.
Lidanys exemplifies the transformative power of music and the perseverance it takes to excel as an artist. Her journey is not only a testament to her talent and determination, but also a celebration of the beauty and connection that music brings to the world.
I am grateful for the connections that the CSO Latino Alliance keeps bringing to my life.
