Can’t decide which concerts to select? Over the next weeks, staff members will offer their own choices for the must-see performances of 2023-24.

Gabriela Lammers, Patron Services associate, is also a violinist and a piano aficionado, so her list leans toward virtuosic works for the strings and keyboard.

Brahms’ Violin Concerto, Dec. 7-9: I got to experience Hilary Hahn perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto during the 2022-23 Season, and it was the first time I saw her live. As a violinist who has been watching Hilary Hahn recordings since they started being uploaded to YouTube, I never thought I’d have the privilege to see her once — let alone twice — performing two of my all-time favorite violin concertos! Mikko Franck will lead Hahn and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in this program.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Feb. 23-27: This work is the one that got me interested in listening to piano pieces at all. I am a massive fan of any and all Romantic-era pieces, and I feel like this concerto exudes romanticism and grandeur in abundance. It makes you feel like you’re falling in love every time you listen to it. On this program, pianist Behzod Abduraimov makes his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hannu Lintu.

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Feb. 8-10: I became an avid Beethoven listener just recently, and I hold this piano concerto near and dear to my heart, only after Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. I love that the first movement is full of both tension and release; it keeps the listener on their toes. I’m looking forward to Seong-Jin Cho’s interpretation of it this season, with the CSO, and conductor Gemma New.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, May 2 and 4: I played Sheherazade when I was in the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra in high school, and since then it has become one of my ultimate favorite orchestral pieces. The third movement especially makes my heart soar, and I can’t wait to be in the audience this time to hear when Elim Chan conducts the CSO in the work.
