Tell us about one of the most memorable experiences during your years in the Civic Orchestra.
My most memorable experience in Civic was a Beyond the Score of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony with Jaap van Zweden. I learned as much as the audience did during the scripted part of the concert, and I felt infinitely more engaged during the full performance of the symphony. The experience left me without any doubt as to the importance of understanding the background and context of every piece I play.
How did your experience in the Civic Orchestra influence your musical career?
Civic was the first orchestra I played in that had a real sense of self. Orchestra is a requirement for music degrees and many summer festival programs, and as a result those ensembles always have at least a few members for whom orchestra is a chore rather than a passion. Everyone in Civic, however, had gone through the audition process specifically to play in that orchestra. As a result, there was a heightened atmosphere of collective purpose and camaraderie. We expected each other to show up prepared and ready to put forth our best effort, and I felt strengthened knowing that we were all on the same journey of figuring out what our futures in music would look like. It was this environment that nurtured my love for orchestral playing.
What is your advice for Civic members who are beginning to take professional auditions?
You will likely face immense amounts of external rejection and internal insecurity. Figure out what you need in order to persevere: friends, family, self-care. Find trusted teachers and mentors who will give you honest and constructive feedback. Stay positive, and stay the course!
What would you say to musicians who are considering an audition for the Civic Orchestra?
Do it! Civic is a wonderful program – warm colleagues, inspiring conductors, invaluable access to rehearsals and coachings with members of the CSO. The city of Chicago is also an amazing place to be when beginning your career. The arts scene is an exciting mix of established greats and vibrant innovators.
