J.T. O'Toole

J.T. O’Toole is a double bassist born, raised, and currently based in Chicago, Illinois.

In addition to his work with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, J.T. has performed with ensembles such as the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico, Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, and Illinois Symphony Orchestra. He received an Artist’s Diploma and Bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, studying with Rachel Calin and Albert Laszlo. He has most recently received his Master’s in Music from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Kurt Muroki.

The 2024/25 season marks his second season with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and first year as part of the fellowship program. He looks forward to continuing to work with his colleagues in the orchestra, as well as to connecting to the myriad communities served by the fellows throughout the year.

When he isn’t playing classical music, James likes to spend time collaborating and writing music with his friends, and can occasionally be found playing electric bass in his brother’s band. Outside of making music, you might find him enjoying long walks (weather permitting), people-watching at coffee shops, or playing his favorite board games at a local game store.
