What inspires your love of music?
Music has been the heartbeat of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, our home was never quiet — there was always something playing. My dad would bring home the latest Beatles single or belt out Gilbert & Sullivan tunes; my mom loved jazz and Debussy. Our record collection spanned everything from original Broadway cast albums to opera and classical “greatest hits.”
We couldn’t always attend live performances, but we listened to everything. That constant exposure sparked a lifelong passion. Although I never learned to play an instrument, I’ve always found my voice through singing: first in a church folk group, then in my high school choir; college chorus and now with the DePaul Community Chorus; the Northwestern Summer Chorus, and cabaret classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Singing has become an essential part of who I am, deepening my appreciation for music in all its forms — especially choral music, which continues to move me in profound ways.
What initially drew you to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra?
I started attending concerts while I was in graduate school, taking advantage of discounted student tickets and making friends with the top row in the gallery! As soon as I was able, I became a subscriber, and then I became involved as a volunteer through the young professionals’ group. Serving as its president was an incredible experience, especially during the year Symphony Center reopened in 1997 — a moment filled with energy, renewed vigor and pride. Since then, my connection to the CSO has only deepened. I’ve remained a subscriber, donor and passionate supporter — particularly of its educational outreach, which I believe is among the organization’s most meaningful and lasting contributions to our community.
Why do you feel it’s important to support the CSO with a planned gift?
When I retired last year, I spent time reflecting on the organizations that have truly shaped my life and my values. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra was at the very top of that list. Music has an extraordinary power to connect us — to each other and to something larger than ourselves. Experiencing live music can be transformative, and I want to help ensure that others can share in that experience for generations to come.
I’m especially inspired by the CSO’s commitment to education and community engagement. Their programs don’t just teach music — they open doors, nurture curiosity, and build bridges between people and communities. Supporting that work feels deeply meaningful to me, both as a way to give back and as a way to help keep the music alive.
