Overview

Brahms’ First Piano Concerto awes with its grand scale, intense passion and unabashedly dramatic piano writing — the ideal showcase for Martin Helmchen, “who brings both freshness and expressive depth to everything he plays” (Chicago Classical Review). Works by Ravel and Richard Strauss evoke the romance and intrigues of Vienna’s bygone golden age.

Conductor David Afkham is replacing Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, who must withdraw from May 28-31 CSO performances while continuing recovery from an injury last week that doesn’t yet allow for international travel. The concert program remains unchanged.
