Saint-Georges’ String Quartet in G minor, Op. 1 No. 5

OVERVIEW

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges is an 18th century French composer, known to be the first classical composer of African descent. Saint-Georges moved to France at the age of seven from the island of Guadeloupe and became an accomplished fencer, composer and violinist. Inspired by Haydn’s early string quartets, Saint-Georges’ quartets are recognized as among the first of their kind published in France.
