Members of the CSO Latino Alliance rang in the holiday season with the group’s annual ¡Noche navideña! on Dec. 17 in Grainger Ballroom. Almost 300 patrons attended the pre-concert party, which featured refreshments and a performance by the Campanella Children’s Choir.

Latino Alliance co-chair Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión welcomed attendees by noting that “it takes a festive village to make an event like this happen.” And festive definitely was the word of the occasion, with holiday lights and decorations adorning Grainger Ballroom and the rest of Orchestra Hall. Guests enjoyed oversized sugar cookies in yuletide shapes, along with beverages including Mexican hot chocolate, sparkling wines and soft drinks.

Based in the north and northwest suburbs, Campanella Children’s Choir believes in the diversity of voices and routinely sings works in many languages. For its ¡Noche navideña! concert, the group offered traditional favorites such as “Winter Wonderland,” “Let It Snow” and “Sleigh Ride,” alongside songs in French and Italian. Especially welcome was the group’s rendition of “Con El Vito, Vito,” sung in Spanish. A traditional folk song, its origins go back to 16th-century Spain.

After the Campanella Children’s Choir concluded with “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” patrons headed to their seats to enjoy the annual holiday revue Merry, Merry Chicago!, featuring members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Broadway vocalist Ashley Brown, conducted by Thomas Wilkins. On this year's program is Herald Angels, written by CSO viola Max Raimi and showcasing Principal Trumpet Esteban Batallán, a native of Spain. (Two more performances of Merry, Merry Chicago! remain, on Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 23 at 1:30 p.m.)

And to all: ¡Feliz navidad y próspero año nuevo!
