Adding to a 50-year history of music-making together, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra reunited in an unforgettable performance on Thursday. The Austro-Germanic program included Mozart’s rarely-performed Six German Dances – marking the first time the CSO has played the work – and his intimate Piano Concerto No. 23, in which pianist Orion Weiss delivered a performance of impressive sensitivity. To conclude the concert, the Orchestra played Schoenberg’s colorful arrangement of Brahms’s First Piano Quartet.
