Read the program book for The Planets, Nov 2-7, 2023.
From Mars to Jupiter to Neptune, the bold and brassy sounds of Holst’s The Planets filled Orchestra Hall on Thursday night as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conductor Daniel Harding performed the iconic suite in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Before the concert, a string quartet of CSO musicians and CSO trumpet John Hagstrom helped celebrate Chicago radio DJ Terri Hemmert’s 50th anniversary at WXRT during the first Classic Encounter event of the season, which Terri has hosted since its inception. Also featured on the program were Brahms’ radiant “Song of Destiny,” with the magnificent vocals of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and Schumann’s dramatic Overture to Manfred.
