Thursday night in Orchestra Hall, CSO Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny captivated the audience with his performance of Lalo Schifrin’s Tuba Concerto, bringing the unique and lesser heard timbres of his instrument to the forefront of the orchestra. Sandwiching the work were the playful passages of J. Strauss, Jr.’s Overture to Indigo and the Forty Thieves, the majestic chords of Schubert’s Ninth Symphony and even a surprise performance of Schifrin’s Theme from Mission: Impossible — all led masterfully from the podium by Riccardo Muti in his second-to-last subscription program as CSO Music Director. A joyful celebration of Muti’s tenure in Chicago co-hosted by the CSO Latino Alliance and African American Network followed the evening’s concert.
