Principal Timpani David Herbert took a virtuosic solo turn in William Kraft’s Timpani Concerto No. 1, alongside the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti. The program’s second half featured two works by Ottorino Respighi, including his Pines of Rome, a four-movement, panoramic tour of the Eternal City and its towering conifer trees. Before the concert, WXRT-FM host Terri Hemmert and Principal Bass Alex Hanna led this season’s final Classic Encounter event. After vigorous applause for the performance, Maestro Muti greeted patrons in a special CD signing in the Rotunda.
