Violist Danny Lai was appointed to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2014 by Music Director Riccardo Muti. Lai embarked on his musical journey at the age of 6, initially exploring the piano. At 10, he chose the viola in his public school music program. The pivotal moment occurred after a performance of the first movement of Mahler’s Second Symphony when Lai resolved to dedicate his life to music at the age of 16.
At Northwestern University, Lai studied viola with Roland Vamos and orchestral repertoire with former CSO Principal Viola Charles Pikler. Lai also played in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Graduating with dual degrees in economics and music performance, Lai joined the viola section of the Colorado Symphony in 2013.
Within the vibrant musical scene of Chicago, Lai has become a sought-after chamber music collaborator, contributing his talents to groups such as Civitas, the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Chicago Pro Musica and engaging with fellow CSO members.
Lai has performed with orchestras including the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra in Japan, the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland, and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra in Sydney, Australia. His competition accolades include victories in the Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition, the Thaviu String Competition and the Luminarts Union League Strings Competition.
Lai plays on a contemporary viola made by Franz Kinberg. Beyond the world of classical music, he finds joy in diverse interests, including an appreciation for jazz, kickboxing, card games, racing and the Chicago Cubs.
