Baritone Hugh Russell has performed with the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras; the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Houston, National, Detroit, Milwaukee, Dallas, Cincinnati, Kansas City, and Seattle symphony orchestras; the Israel Philharmonic and Danish Radio Symphony; the Toronto and Vancouver symphony orchestras, and the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montréal, among many others.
He has been honored to work with many eminent conductors, including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jaap van Zweden, Charles Dutoit, Leonard Slatkin, Manfred Honeck, Edo de Waart, Kent Nagano, Donald Runnicles, Steuart Bedford, Michael Christie, Hans Graf, Carlos Miguel Prieto and Rossen Milanov.
Russell has been featured in opera productions at Los Angeles Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Atlanta Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Arizona Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Vancouver Opera, Calgary Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Manitoba Opera, the Wexford Festival and Angers Nantes Opéra.
He has also been featured in recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and in many appearances with the New York Festival of Song. As a pianist, he has collaborated with Stephanie Blythe at a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Seattle Opera and with Christine Brewer for Illinois Humanities.
Highlights of the current season include appearances with the Seattle Symphony and Sun Valley Music Festival as baritone soloist in Orff’s Carmina burana and the Grant Park Music Festival in Brahms’ Requiem, and a return to the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte.
