Kevin Short

Current and future engagements for bass-baritone Kevin Short consist of Porgy in Porgy and Bess, Angelotti in Tosca and Emilie Griffith (cover) in Champion at the Metropolitan Opera, Porgy and Bess with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg, Getty’s Goodbye, Mr. Chips (recording and film) and Zuniga in Carmen at Washington National Opera.

In addition to performing in more than 20 works at the Metropolitan Opera, Short has sung at the Santa Fe Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Opera Theatre of St .Louis and the New York City Opera. In Europe, he has performed at Opéra Comique, Théâtre Caen, Grand Théâtre du Luxembourg, Oper der Stadt Köln, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Theater Aachen, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Theater Basel and festivals including Baden-Baden and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

Short’s concert appearances include the Opera Orchestra of New York in the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Verdi’s I Lombardi with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah at Cleveland Orchestra, Rossini’s Stabat Mater at San Francisco Symphony, Stravinsky’s Les Noces with the Boston Symphony, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress with the St. Louis and Detroit symphonies, Beethoven’s Ninth with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Messiah and Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust with the New Japan Philharmonic, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Swiss RAI Orchestra and Parma Reggio Emilia Orchestra in a concert of operatic favorites. He made a solo aria album with Lawrence Foster and the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Marseille on Pentatone, which was released in 2018.

Short received his bachelor’s degree at Morgan State University, a master of music from the Curtis Institute of Music and studied at the Juilliard School of Music Opera Center. He was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the International Competition for Verdian Voices, the Rosa Ponselle International Vocal Competition, the Bruce Yarnell Competition for Basses and Baritones, the Opera America Competition and the Leiderkranz Competition. He has received awards and grants from the Sullivan Foundation, the Shoshana Foundation and Opera Index.
