Born in Lecco, Italy, in 1992, Giovanni Sala started his musical studies at an early age at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Como. Winner of the 2014 Associazione Lirica Concertistica Italiana Competition for Young Opera Singers, he debuted as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, directed by Graham Vick, and as Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore at the Teatro Sociale in Como.
In 2015, he won the International Competition of the Teatro alla Scala Academy in Milan, where he debuted in the role of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, the role of Hervey in Anna Bolena and Ferrando in Così fan tutte at the Theatre Carlo Felice in Genoa. He made his debut as Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff in the 2014-2015 Teatro Comunale of Ferrara Opera season and at the Ravenna Festival, conducted by Riccardo Muti.
Other notable engagements from the past seasons include Missa Defunctorum by Paisiello in Florence and Pavia with Teatro alla Scala, conducted by Riccardo Muti; Beethoven’s Missa solemnis in Trieste, conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, conducted by Fabio Luisi at Teatro di Camogli.
In 2020, Sala reprised the role of Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni for the Macerata Opera Festival. For the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi, he performed the role of Orfeo in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, directed by P.L. Pizzi and conducted by Ottavio Dantone, with the Accademia Bizantina Orchestra. He was Gomatz in Mozart’s Zaide for Opera Lombardia, directed by Graham Vick, and Ferrando in Così fan tutte, under Riccardo Muti at the Teatro Regio di Torino.
Future engagements include Thais in Milan, Haydn’s La Creazione with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Don Giovanni in Turin and Berlin.
