Haitink Conducts Bruckner & Beethoven

Oct 25

8:00 PM

Beethoven, Bruckner

Thursday, October 25, 2018

“There could be no more impressive demonstration of modern orchestral virtuosity at its committed best than the pairing of Haitink and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra” (Chicago Tribune). Former principal conductor Bernard Haitink, renowned for his transformative interpretations of symphonic masterworks with the CSO, returns to lead Bruckner’s rich, kaleidoscopic Sixth Symphony. These performances are the conductor’s only U.S. concert engagement this season. Paul Lewis, “a defining interpreter of Beethoven” (Chicago Tribune), joins forces with the orchestra and Haitink to perform the composer’s triumphant Second Piano Concerto.

Please join us in Grainger Ballroom immediately following the concert for a Q&A with the evening’s guest artists or CSO musicians. Open to all ticketholders.

Approximate concert duration: 106 minutes including intermission

Of Beethoven, British pianist Paul Lewis confesses, “He is a kind of musical touchstone." The composer's works form the core of Lewis' repertoire. "Beethoven, in particular, just because it’s simply some of the greatest music. And your journey with it is never finished. That’s what it makes it fascinating.” Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories

Characterizations such as “contemporary” or “conservative,” “modern” or “old-fashioned” are useless to describe Bruckner’s extraordinary music. A better adjective would be “timeless." It seems to have existed for all eternity, yet manages to be completely new every time it is performed. Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
