Harrison, Brahms

Saturday, October 28, 2017

Praised for its "joyful confidence and youthful strength" (Musical America), the China NCPA Orchestra brings an eclectic program of symphonic works to Symphony Center. American composer Lou Harrison's Pipa Concerto spotlights a traditional Chinese instrument performed by the world's reigning pipa virtuoso and Silk Road Ensemble member Wu Man.

Please join us for a postconcert CD signing in Grainger Ballroom with Wu Man.

Approximate concert duration: 120 minutes including intermission

Zhao Jiping Violin Concerto No. 1 [United States Premiere]
Harrison Pipa Concerto
Brahms Symphony No. 4

Traditional White Snow in Spring [Pre-intermission ENORE]
Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 6 [ENCORE]
Yuankai Bao Bamboo-Flute Tune [ENCORE]

Wu Man is the world’s best known and most respected exponent of the pipa, a four-stringed, lute-like instrument introduced 2,000 years ago. Along with appearing as a founding member of cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s cross-genre Silk Road Ensemble, she tours worldwide on her own. (She appears Oct. 28 in an SCP Special Concert with the China NCPA Orchestra.) In 2013, Musical America named her instrumentalist of the year — the first performer of a non-Western instrument to be so honored. Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
