In putting together this installment of Chanticleer’s annual holiday program, music director William Fred Scott sought a variety of musical styles, shapes and colors. “Add to that a certain sense of adventure and difficulty for the singers, which is balanced by an equally cozy feeling of familiarity, joy, happiness and love,” he said. “We like the sacred mission of our Christmas programs, and are happy that our audiences feel the same way.” Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories

Chanticleer, the all-male a cappella choir based in San Francisco, takes its name from a literary source, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, specifically, "The Nun's Priest's Tale." Baritone Charlie Erikson, a founding member of the ensemble, was reading The Canterbury Tales when the group was considering names, and he suggested Chanticleer, the name of the “clear-singing” rooster in the book. For his part, Chaucer had actually borrowed the name from the ancient French folktale Renard the Fox. The name combines the French words chanter (“to sing”) and clair (“clear”). Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
