Louis Lortie

A renowned champion of the vibrant works of Franz Liszt, Louis Lortie opens the 2017/18 Symphony Center Piano season with the first two suites from the composer's Années de pèlerinage. Drawing heavily on the influence of Romantic art and literature, as well as nature, these are some of Liszt's finest and most quintessential compositions. "Lortie's credentials for taking on this greatest of musical pilgrimages are self-evident from the start…delivered with epic sweep and grandeur, wonderfully shimmering tremolos, and a huge tonal range" (BBC Music Magazine).

Approximate concert duration: 130 minutes including intermission

One of the challenges of being a touring classical soloist is the occasional jet lag triggered by dashing across time zones. Pianist Louis Lortie is conquering this situation this season, because he is artist-in-residence with the Shanghai Symphony, a post that requires him to travel around the globe from his residences in Italy and Germany. "You learn some tricks," he said, "and you cope with it.” Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
