Minnesota Orchestra

3:00 PM

Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven

Sunday, January 28, 2018

One of America's top symphonic ensembles, the Minnesota Orchestra has a long history of acclaimed performances around the world. Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä and his celebrated ensemble—both superb Sibelius interpreters—head to Orchestra Hall for the composer's profound symphonic poem En Saga, along with Tchaikovsky's majestic First Piano Concerto with Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. "That plush, super-charged Minnesota sound is back with a new edge of tenacity" (The Guardian).

Approximate concert duration: 120 minutes including intermission

Program

Sibelius En Saga
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1
Beethoven Symphony No. 7

Sibelius Tanz-Intermezzo, Op. 45, No. 2 [ENCORE]

Performers

Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä has long championed the music of his compatriot Jean Sibelius, performing it both with his own ensembles and as a guest conductor worldwide. He and the Minnesota Orchestra have recorded the complete set of the composer’s seven symphonies, with the second disc winning a Grammy Award in 2014. “I have never been tired of that music,” Vänskä said. “It gets deeper and deeper the more I conduct it.” Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories

Ringing in the New Year, pianist Inon Barnatan joined the Minnesota Orchestra for two performances of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, and he'll close out the month of January in a similar fashion. Once again, he performs as soloist in Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto for a three-city Midwest tour with Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra.  Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
