Muti Conducts Schubert Mass in E-flat Major

Mar 23

8:00 PM

Weber, Raimi, Schubert

Friday, March 23, 2018

The celebrated Chicago Symphony Chorus, marking its 60th anniversary in 2017/18, joins Riccardo Muti, the CSO and international soloists for a moving performance of Schubert's exquisite final Mass, written at the end of the young composer's life. “The performance of Schubert's Mass by Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will likely figure on best-of lists. Muti and his CSO forces put across the heaven-storming drama as much as the moments of consolation and spiritual introspection” (Chicago Classical Review).

Poetry in Grainger Ballroom starting at 7 p.m.

Additional Dates for this Program

Until stumbling upon the work of Lisel Mueller, CSO viola Max Raimi wasn’t much interested in poetry. “My dad used to make us recite poems at the dinner table, Browning and Tennyson, stuff like that," he said. "I’d try to read a poem every week. I would never get it." Twenty years ago Mueller read about Mueller’s Pulitzer Prize in an article that included one of her short poems. “I got it immediately,” he said. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days.” Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
