Art Institute Chamber Series: Challenging Conventions

Innovation meets the unexpected in an afternoon featuring dazzling music and art. Works by Dvořák and Bottesini highlight fresh and unusual instrumentations, while Seed’s Tangoesque journeys through playful genre combinations. Schnittke’s vulnerable and haunting Piano Quintet is a deeply personal emblem of the composer’s life experiences. After the concert, a gallery tour explores the Hairy Who, a self-named group of six artists whose late 1960s art uses personal symbolism and popular culture imagery to comment on society’s notions of identity, social mores and more.

Riccardo Muti leads an evening of Austro-German and Italian splendor at the CSO's annual Symphony Ball concert, featuring beloved Strauss waltzes and Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No. 24 with David Fray. “Fray is poetry on the keyboard” (Chicago Tribune).

A festive preconcert reception is open to all ticketholders at 6:00 p.m. at Symphony Center. The preconcert reception will include drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres, entertainment and other festivities.

Praised by the New York Times as “astonishing, with an extraordinary unity of sound and purpose,” the Jerusalem Quartet partners with husband-and-wife duo Pinchas Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth for a program of lush, late romantic works. Strauss’ Sextet is a richly textured recreation of baroque chamber music from the beginning of his final opera, Capriccio. Transfigured Night reflects Schoenberg’s creative shift from the influence of Brahms to Wagner. Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence is a melody-laden showcase for string sextet.
