Daniel Johansson

The Swedish tenor Daniel Johansson has this summer appeared as Don José in Carmen at the Festival in Bregenz and at Semperoper in Dresden, followed by Matteo in Arabella at the San Francisco Opera and Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Deutsche Oper in Berlin. Daniel will this winter sing Don José again, in a new production of Carmen at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, followed by Apollon/Dyonisos in Orest at Wiener Staatsoper.

Last season included Don José in Carmen at Bregenzer Festspiele followed by Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo and at the opera in Stockholm. Daniel has also sung his first Siegmund in Die Walküre at Theater an der Wien and Count Loris Ipano in Giordani’s Fedora.

In 2017 Daniel performed his first Lohengrin at the Musiktheater in Essen. He also visited the Semperoper as Narraboth in Salome and as Froh in Das Rheingold with Mo Thielemann. Daniel also appeared as Don José at Deutsche Oper Berlin, at The Finland National Opera in Helsinki and at theNorwegian Opera.

Daniel Johansson has previously sung Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Bregenzer Festspiele as well as Rodolfo in La Bohéme, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (Stockholm and Opera Hedeland) and Ein Sänger in Der Rosenkavalier at the Royal Swedish Opera. Daniel has also added Florestan in Fidelio to his repertoire, performed in concert with Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Earlier seasons have included Rodolfo in Helsinki and in Oslo, Don José in Oslo and he has appeared as Alfredo in La Traviata both in Stockholm, in Oslo, at Opera Hedeland and at Grand Théâtre de Genève. He has sung the role of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte in Stockholm, Oslo and at Palau de les Arts in Valencia. He has appeared as Alfred in Die Fledermaus, as Narraboth in Salome, Macduff in Macbeth, Ein junger Seemann in Tristan und Isolde and as Telemaco in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, all at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo and he has sung Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Göteborg Opera, Sweden.

Other notable engagements have included the title role of Faust at Folkoperan, Stockholm and Lenskij in Eugene Onegin in Chautauqua, New York. He has sung Melot in the 2nd act of Tristan und Isolde in concerts with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Harding as well as with Orchestre de Paris and Christoph Eschenbach. He appeared at the opening of the new Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen, singing Mozart’s Coronation Mass under the baton of Adam Fischer and sang the Shepherd in Oedipus Rex with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen in Stockholm and Brussels. He has sung the tenor part in the chamber version of Das Lied von der Erde in Sweden and Finland.

In 2007 Daniel Johansson won the 1st prize in the Gösta Winbergh Award. He has received a number of scholarships from the Swedish Royal Musical Academy, the Anders Wall Foundation and others. Daniel Johansson holds the 2009 Birgit Nilsson Scholarship. During the spring of 2012 he was awarded the 1st prize in the Wilhelm Stenhammar Competition. Daniel Johansson studied at the University College of Opera in Stockholm.

In June 2018 Daniel Johansson was named Court singer by the Swedish King.
