Strauss’ tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra showcases the CSO’s magnificent brass section.

Violinist Baiba Skride is enjoying a heady series of debuts with top American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony. This month, she makes her inaugural appearances Oct. 27-30 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, including a performance Oct. 28 at Wheaton College. “I’m so excited to come to Chicago,” Skride said. “[The CSO] always has been one of [my] dream orchestras. I’m just going to enjoy every single minute I can play with them.” Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories

Born in Colombia but trained and now based in Vienna, conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada appreciates the necessity of straddling many worlds. As the music director of the Houston Symphony, he's on a mission to attract new audiences to classical music. In Houston, he's introduced post-concert Q&A sessions, short remarks from the podium, video interviews projected overhead between stage set-ups and other means of what he calls "building a relationship with the audience."
