Salonen & Yo-Yo Ma

Mar 9

8:00 PM

Adams, Salonen, Stravinsky

Thursday, March 9, 2017

Stravinsky’s ballet about the lovelorn puppet Petrushka remains one of the most striking orchestral works of the modern repertoire. Esa-Pekka Salonen couples Petrushka with John Adams’ equally playful Slonimsky’s Earbox and the world premiere of Salonen’s own Cello Concerto, played by the legendary Yo-Yo Ma.

Note for the Newcomer: Salonen's Cello Concerto, a multi-ensemble co-commission of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, the Barbican Centre and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, will make its world premiere here in Chicago.

Additional Dates for this Program

Esa-Pekka Salonen explains that his Cello Concerto, co-commissioned by the CSO, was born "when I decided to spend a few months researching for new kinds of textures without a concrete plan how to use them." He wrote the work specifically for Yo-Yo Ma, whom he calls "one of the most unique life-givers and communicators of our time." Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories

When composing, Esa-Pekka Salonen confesses that he tries "to avoid the moment when I'm back in my studio and I sit down and panic — that moment that everybody knows. ... Any degree of discomfort is to be avoided. This is my motto." Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories
