Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Charles Dutoit leads the CSO in the US Premiere of Stravinsky's recently re-discovered Funeral Song as well as Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony, which the composer called "a symphony of the greatness of the human spirit, a song of praise of free and happy mankind." Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk, who "enthralls the audience from the first to last note" (The Strad), performs Dvořák's popular Cello Concerto.

Enjoy a Q&A with the artists after all Tuesday CSO concerts.

Note for the Newcomer: Dvořák wrote his Cello Concerto in America while serving as director of the National Conservatory of Music of America.

A long-lost work by Igor Stravinsky will receive its U.S. premiere in concerts by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, led by Charles Dutoit, on April 6-11. Considered lost for more than a century, Stravinsky's Funeral Song (Pogrebal’naya Pesnya), Op. 5, was recently reconstructed from orchestral parts found in 2015 at the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory. For Sergei Prokofiev, Chicago and the CSO became the first stop on the road to sweeping popularity in the United States. From 1917 over the next two decades, the composer-conductor-pianist appeared here in seven different programs, including world premieres of his Piano Concerto No. 3 and his opera The Love of Three Oranges. Read more at CSO Sounds & Stories

These performances honor the memory of Marcia S. Cohn and her family’s generosity to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
