[May 15-17 only]
Charismatic young Russian Vladimir Jurowski conducts a
program devoted to some of Richard Strauss’ most poignant
and gorgeous music. The early yet masterful Serenade for
Wind Instruments is followed by Metamorphosen, Strauss’s
moving lament for Dresden, the German city notoriously
destroyed by firebombing in World War II. This all-Strauss
program concludes with his final post-war masterworks: the
pastoral Oboe Concerto and the beautiful Four Last Songs.

Brahms
Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel
“A poet at the piano” (Chicago Tribune), Emanuel Ax presents
the third installment of his 2013/14 exploration of Brahms as
both composer and muse. Here he pairs two of Brahms’ works
dedicated to Clara Schumann—the Variations and Fugue on a
Theme by Handel, influenced by Baroque contrapuntal forms,
and the intensely romantic Second Sonata—with two newly
commissioned works from Brett Dean and Missy Mazzoli.
The CSO is grateful to Dan J. Epstein and the Dan J. Epstein Foundation for
underwriting the co-commission and providing additional concert sponsorship support.
