The moment has arrived for Riccardo Muti to begin his tenure as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

His inaugural residency and its surrounding events, named Festa Muti in celebration of our new Italian maestro, exhibit his vision for this great orchestra, demonstrate the artistic excellence of our musicians and explore ways in which music can bring the community together.

The maestro’s uncompromising standards of artistic excellence are showcased in all of his concerts with the Orchestra. From Haydn to Berlioz and Beethoven to Cherubini, musical explorations await that will thrill audiences as we enter the next chapter of CSO history. Witness the brilliant chemistry between the CSO musicians and Riccardo Muti and expect to be inspired.

With the appointments of Yo-Yo Ma as the CSO’s new Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant and two new Mead Composers-in-Residence, Anna Clyne and Mason Bates, Riccardo Muti has created dynamic collaborations that bring exciting musical experiences to audiences and support a new generation of musicians. Experience one of these collaborations firsthand at the opening MusicNOW concert of the 2010/11 season on October 4.

Riccardo Muti’s tenure begins with several important initiatives that deepen the Orchestra’s engagement with the Chicago community. On September 19, all are invited to experience Muti’s first moment as music director at a free Concert for Chicago in Millennium Park. The maestro also takes the Civic Orchestra of Chicago to Pilsen for an open rehearsal at Benito Juarez Community Academy on October 9. His commitment goes beyond the podium when he performs for incarcerated youth at the Illinois Youth Center at Warrenville in October.

Festa Muti will be an unforgettable part of the 2010/11 season. Join us in celebrating this monumental moment in CSO history.
