civic orchestra of chicago
For nearly a century, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago has prepared young
musicians for a life in music. Founded in 1919 by the CSO’s second music director,
Frederick Stock, Civic is an intensive training program that couples unique access
to the extraordinary musical resources of the CSO with real world experience as
an emerging professional. As the program trains musicians, it pays tribute to its
name by uniting them in an ensemble for the city. The musicians present seven free
full-orchestra concerts annually—six in Orchestra Hall and one in a community
location—for approximately 14,000 people. In preparation for each concert, Civic
musicians work closely with members of the CSO and Civic Principal Conductor
Cliff Colnot to refine their orchestral skills and citizen musicianship.
