In 1919, Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) Music Director
Frederick Stock
had the visionary foresight to create a place where young musicians could be
mentored by the CSO
and develop into world-class artists
. Today, as the only
training orchestra of its kind affiliated with a major orchestra in the U.S., the Civic
Orchestra continues to benefit from the rich heritage of the CSO. and the leadership
of its current music director, Riccardo Muti.
As we celebrate our 95th anniversary, we are excited to look toward a future in which
the Civic Orchestra continues to be relevant and vital to young musicians and the
greater Chicago community in the 21st century.
The Civic Orchestra believes in the values of Citizen
Musician and strives to expand the role of music in civic
and cultural life by creating and enhancing communities
through music. Under the leadership of CSO Judson
and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma and Civic
Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot, the Civic musicians develop
as exceptional orchestral players and engaged citizen
musicians. To learn more about the CSO’s Citizen Musician initiative, please visit
