Colnot Conducts Shostakovich

Monday, October 7, 8:00

Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot leads a powerful opening to Civic’s 95th season. The program features two works from Dmitri Shostakovich’s later years: the symphonic poem October, one of his rarely performed orchestral works, and the Fifteenth, his final symphonic masterpiece.

Beethoven 3

Tuesday, November 19, 8:00

Rei Hotoda, whose “conducting is a wellbalanced mixture of freedom and control,” (Columbus Dispatch), leads Civic in Four Sea Interludes, celebrating the centennial of Britten’s birth. Beethoven’s Eroica, regarded as a turning point in music history, is known for its groundbreaking portrayal of death, rebirth, strife and resistance.

An expert on Baroque and late Romantic music, Nicholas McGegan offers this program pairing works by Bach and Brahms. “McGegan, a consummate master of this style, led a performance that was at once tender and vivacious, brisk and rhythmically free” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Strauss Don Quixote

Yo-Yo Ma, world-renowned cellist, joins Civic for an exciting collaboration on Strauss’ delightful score depicting the misadventures of the Man of La Mancha, led by Carlos Miguel Prieto. This is sure to be a memorable culmination of Civic’s season-long project with Mr. Ma.

Prokofiev said that his Fifth Symphony was “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” Jaap van Zweden leads a powerful journey through this masterpiece, from its haunting first movement to its manic finale.

Community Concert - Strauss Don Quixote

Join the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto and cellist Joshua Zajac for this program including Don Quixote, a masterwork for symphony orchestra and cello which draws inspiration from Miguel de Cervantes’ novel by the same name.

Free and open to the public. No tickets required.

This concert is offered through a partnership with the Advisory Council of the South Shore Cultural Center and the Chicago Park District.
