The Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions provide young musicians with the opportunity to be evaluated by music professionals, and the chance to perform as a soloist on stage with the CSO.

Initiated during the CSO’s 1919/20 season by Frederick Stock, the CSO Youth Auditions have provided a platform for Illinois’ most outstanding young classical soloists to showcase their talents as they compete for an opportunity to perform with the CSO.

Auditions are held annually for a single, rotating instrument family – piano; strings; woodwinds, brass and percussion. The finalists audition on Orchestra Hall’s stage for an esteemed panel of judges.

Past winners of the Youth Auditions have included CSO Associate Concertmaster Stephanie Jeong, Walter Liberace, Rachel Barton Pine, and Herbie Hancock.

Applications for the 2016 Auditions are now closed. Visit this page in September 2016 for information about the 2017 Auditions.

The Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions are presented by the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

They are supported in kind by WFMT’s Introductions
