Description
Muti Conducts Franck
Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Honegger’s Mouvement symphonique No. 1 depicts the mechanical movements of a steam locomotive, the Pacific 231. CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates’ Alternative Energy explores the human progression through greater and more powerful forces of energy, blending electronic sounds recorded at Fermilab with percussion and orchestra. Riccardo Muti completes this program with Franck’s Symphony in D Minor, a treasure-trove of rich melody.Alternative Energy was commissioned for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by the Louise Durham Mead Fund for new music.

“Energy is often related to transportation but it really powers everything we do. I looked at this as not really a super-literal program or some kind of a narrative of a specific industry, but more like a general concept. I thought of ‘alternative’ in the sense of we’re always looking for the next thing that is going to keep us moving, I guess. Once the combustion engine was alternative energy that moved us from the horse and buggy.” –Mason Bates

When a rag-tag group of clowns, portrayed by actors from Lookingglass Theatre Company, interrupts a performance of “serious” classical music to present their own show, the clever conductor comes up with a compromise that allows both the clowns and the orchestra to perform together. The antics of the ridiculous clown troupe, punctuated by dazzling circus skills like juggling and tumbling, help to amplify the extraordinary artistry of the Orchestra performing Stravinsky’s delightful Suite from Pulcinella. Free preconcert activities begin one hour before each performance. Recommended for families with children ages 5–9.

CSO Chamber at the Art Institute of Chicago: Echoes and Variations
Chamber

Visual artists like impressionist Claude Monet often returned to the same subject again and again in a series of works in an attempt to capture changes that occur over the passage of time. Musical variations, by their very nature presented sequentially, deepen and develop an original theme through a rich harmonic, rhythmic and textural kaleidoscope.

To purchase tickets, please call Patron Services at 312-294-3000 or download the AIC Chamber brochure to learn more about this exciting series.

CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne’s new piece is the music of voyages, from stormy darkness to enchanted worlds. Riccardo Muti leads the CSO in Schubert’s magical Great C-Major Symphony, a rhythmically buoyant work Robert Schumann famously described as a symphony of “heavenly length.”Night Ferry was commissioned for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by the Louise Durham Mead Fund for new music.

“Going back to what I felt as a musician playing his [Schubert’s] music, there was a juxtaposition of these intensely dark, emotional contents and sometimes things that were complete opposites... Night Ferry—as in the boat, not the fairy, is navigating being really up or really down. Something very interesting that Schubert said that when he wrote songs of love, they’re songs of pain, and when he wrote songs of pain, they’re songs of love. It’s a juxtaposition or bipolarity which is part of his genetic and musical makeup. Maestro Muti described it as a ‘spiritual thunderstorm,’ the similarity between nature and our internal nature. In many ways the ocean is an image of our own internal journey.” –Anna Clyne
